A caregiver for an elderly individual has a lot of things to be responsible for. Sometimes, though, when you are taking on more than you can handle, will you be willing to ask for help?
The majority of in-home care providers in the United States are actually family members who take on this role willingly, even though they may feel as though it’s their responsibility anyway. When they do, they usually don’t have a lot of experience with caregiving. As a result, they may end up feeling as though they are ‘in over their heads.’
When that happens, the general tendency is to lose sleep, take off from work, and stress about the things that they don’t feel as though they can control. Then you begin to make mistakes, miss appointments, and end up having trouble at work, in your relationships, and even with the elderly loved one for whom you’re supposed to care.
Take a step back, take a few deep breaths, and understand that if you’re unable to provide the right level of care for the elderly individual, then it’s time to ask for help.
What kind of help can a caregiver ask for?
There are many things that can be done to support an in-home care provider. The first thing that you could do would be to contact a home care agency and talk to them about getting another in-home care provider to come in and assist your loved one for a couple of days a week.
This is one thing that too many family members don’t realize; you can hire a caregiver for just a couple of hours a day, and even just one or two days a week, if that’s what’s needed.
Another thing that you can do is to contact a home care agency and ask questions if you have them. When you aren’t sure about something, when you don’t know the right thing to be doing, instead of trying to guess, ask someone with the right level of experience.
Even though you have taken on this caregiver role on yourself, that doesn’t mean you have to go it alone the entire time. Home care agencies are more than willing to answer questions. The goal is to ensure that elderly individuals get the best care.
Finally, be willing to let your loved ones know that you’re having trouble. If you don’t, then you could feel as though you’re drowning under the weight of what you’re attempting to do.
